Notes on Tales of Two Cities Lecture


·        3rd city of Manchester in tales of two cities

·        1857- dickens and friends wrote “frozen deep”

o   Inspired by journey to northwest passage

·        Production was done (wanted to be done by professional actors) not friends and family


·        Fell in love with “Lucie”—actress that was added in tales of two cities

·        Parallelism—‘D’ for Dick (character) and Darla?

·        1858- became into public readings for money, not charity

o   Established new relationship with his audience

·        May 1888- separation with his wife

·        Dickens is acquainted with London

o   Suffering is well established, disturbing childhood

o   Extensive and peculiar knowledge of city

o   Ricketiness and darkness, fascination, “vile” place, Magic Land some

o   Found it hard to write in London—Sets me up to write

o   Correspondence for prosperity

o   “London is like a newspaper, disconnected”

o   London was a city of extremes, elaborate, etc.

·        1844- went to Paris

o   Made an extraordinary place/memory, separate from reality, strange and impressed, expressive place

o   Walked streets, all day, 2 days, every person were like a different leaf in the book. “never was such a place”

o   City of 900,000 people, half the size of London, expanded in late 1860’s.

o   Reconstructs Paris’ nobility in book/novel/story

o   Visited Paris at least 15 times

·        British embassy, gave enormous public reading

o   Political change, things changed like the emperor

·        Morgue was physical attraction--- dickens was attracted to repulsion
